Ambigram Zoetrope Coin: this whimsical spinning coin just arrived in my @thecuriositybox subscription, with an ambigram of heads/tails on both sides (for complete ambiguity?) and a fun twirling coin zoetrope animation as seen via video aliasing.

StarCaster Zoetrope Spinner: Lit from within with a white LED this 3D printed spinner has pinhole tunnels precisely placed such that an animation of a swirling galaxy is created when spun into motion. The animation is designed to be seen with unaided eyes- no camera or phone is needed to see the swirling stars. Borrowed a caliper stand for the fidget to allow a nice framing for video capture of the animation. A another curious creation by maker Mike of Prime Tower Designs.

Zoetrope Vinyl: slight adjustment of the iPhone camera frame rate reveals an amazing animation built into this multicolored vinyl release “Hurry Up and Wait” by the Dune Rats. The art is designed to interact with the video process, similar to the animation effect of a flip book, but in a repeating cycle like that of the phenakistiscope, the 1833 invention that started moving media animation that lead to the development of movies and video.

Zoetrope: the physics and psychophysics of motion animation- still images flashed in rapid succession produces the illusion of motion through persistence of vision. The slits are crucial to creating the illusion by blacking out the visual stimulus for a short duration- without these pauses only a blur is perceived. When the image flash rate is above the flicker fusion frequency (approximately 16Hz) we perceive fluid motion- the basis for all movies and TV.

eyeMo Linear Zoetrope: the physics and psychophysics of motion animation- still images flashed in rapid succession produce the illusion of motion through persistence of vision. This unique version uses an array of lenses, and the images are flashed one by one as the series of lenses moves past the eye. When the image flash rate is above the flicker fusion frequency (approximately 16Hz) we perceive fluid motion- the basis for all movies and TV.
