Reactive Vortex Marble: the latest addition to my physics inspired glass art collection which combines bright fluorescent inclusions (which pop at 395nm), a chunk of opalescent iridescence, and the spherical lensing effect that produces the spiral depth illusion of these vortex marbles. An orb of lampwork magic by Paul Katherman @paulietwofingers

Vortex Pyramid Fidget: a four sided pyramid is dissected by a spiral cut in the shape of an eight petal flower (as seen from the bottom) in this math inspired kinetic toy. The interesting behavior stems from the connection between translational motion and rotational motion and the precision manufacturing allowed by the 3D printing process. An amazing creation by RJ Design and expertly printed by my friend Jason Veatch.
Vortex by Lava Lamp
A DIY kit by the makers of Lava Lamp, home experimentation set with booklet of ideas to try:

Vortex Lamp: a simple whirlpool powered by a magnetic stirrer like those in a chemistry lab and lit by LEDs. A DIY kit by Lava Lamp brand- which comes with glitter and beads, but I found the water vortex alone was mesmerizing to watch. Note the intricately changing structure of the vortex in the slow motion close up.
Magnetic Stirrer Vortex
This inexpensive lab stirrer can be used in many investigations and demonstrations:

Magnetic Stirrer Vortex: whirlpool powered by a magnetic stirrer (like those in a chemistry lab) with a range of up to 2300 rpm. Investigating the intricately changing structure of the vortex in slow motion. More amazing physics with this magnetic stirrer in future posts.

Vortex Marble with Gilson Opal Sphere: glass art intersects with the physics of optics in this spectacular piece from lampworking master Raven Copeland aka @madglasser -The clear glass face acts as a convex lens giving the illusion that the spiral goes deeper than the diameter of the marble. The illusion is even stronger in person and I'm still trying to figure out how Raven produces the amazing 3-D background features.

Fumed Spiral Marble: glass art intersects with the physics of optics and materials science in this gold and silver fumed marble by Colby James Boyd (@marblesincharge). Vaporized gold and silver, deposited in very thin films, interacts with light waves via differential refraction, selective absorption, and interference, creating colorful iridescent and ethereal forms within the glass. Spinning this marble on a concave lens showcases its intricate and beautiful structure. Follow @marblesincharge here on IG to see (and buy) his latest work.

Vortex Dome Kalliroscope: kinetic art with rheoscopic fluid in a rotating base. Visualizing the invisible- the Vortex Dome is the creation of engineer/inventor and @physicsfun featured artist David Fowler aka @physicshack who creates this modern rotating kalliroscope that generates complex and beautiful structures similar to those seen in the cloud bands of the gas giants of our solar system like Jupiter. The capsule is constructed of high quality glass on a heavy stainless steel base which glides upon an included bearing set for long spin times.

Vortex Marble: glass art intersects with the physics of optics in this lampwork art form invented by Kevin O’Grady circa 1994- and this marble bears his signature mark on the back. The clear glass face on these marbles acts as a convex lens giving the illusion that the spiral goes deeper than the diameter of the marble. Different kinds of dichroic glass (doped with thin layers of metals and oxides) is mixed in to the borosilicate marble to create the intense colors.

Split Vortex Marble: What does a vortex marble look like from the inside? Here are two examples of this amazing lampwork art: a split vortex marble by Raven Copeland aka @madglasser, and a classic vortex marble by the inventor of the art form Kevin O’Grady @kevinogradyglass (swipe to view). This rare split marble has been cut down the symmetry axis of the spiral and polished to reveal the inner workings of the vortex marble illusion, where the spherical clear glass face of such marbles acts as a convex lens giving the illusion that the spiral goes deeper than the diameter of the marble.
