Magic Vortex Marble: glass art intersects with the physics of optics in another spectacular piece from lampworking master Raven Copeland aka @madglasser -The clear glass face of the marble acts as a convex lens giving the illusion that the spiral goes deeper than the diameter of the marble. A Gibson opal seems suspended in space above the unique vortex- see the @madglasserInstagram stream for more from his Magic Marble series. The vortex depth illusion in these is even stronger in person!

The illusion is even stronger in person and I'm still trying to figure out how Raven produces the amazing 3-D background features.

Fumed Spiral Marble: glass art intersects with the physics of optics and materials science in this gold and silver fumed marble by Colby James Boyd (@marblesincharge). Vaporized gold and silver, deposited in very thin films, interacts with light waves via differential refraction, selective absorption, and interference, creating colorful iridescent and ethereal forms within the glass. Spinning this marble on a concave lens showcases its intricate and beautiful structure. Follow @marblesincharge here on IG to see (and buy) his latest work.

Vortex Marble: glass art intersects with the physics of optics in this lampwork art form invented by Kevin O’Grady circa 1994- and this marble bears his signature mark on the back. The clear glass face on these marbles acts as a convex lens giving the illusion that the spiral goes deeper than the diameter of the marble. Different kinds of dichroic glass (doped with thin layers of metals and oxides) is mixed in to the borosilicate marble to create the intense colors.

Split Vortex Marble: What does a vortex marble look like from the inside? Here are two examples of this amazing lampwork art: a split vortex marble by Raven Copeland aka @madglasser, and a classic vortex marble by the inventor of the art form Kevin O’Grady @kevinogradyglass (swipe to view). The split marble has been cut down the symmetry axis of the spiral and polished to reveal the inner workings of the vortex marble illusion, where the spherical clear glass face of such marbles acts as a convex lens giving the illusion that the spiral goes deeper than the diameter of the marble.
